Always thought it was amazing that Trips did absolutely everything in his power to avoid Lesnar during Lesnar's original run. Evolution vs Lesnar would have been based but nah Triple nose dick was too small to do it because he knew Lesnar would go over in the end so instead he spent 3 years playing with his friend Shawn and having terrible fueds with ex WCW guys.

it's not that surprising when you realize HHH always saw himself as The Top Guy and once Rock and Austin were out of the picture, he was for sure going to get a massive run. Then ope, Brock Lesnar happened, and Brock Lesnar was the undisputed Top Guy both in terms of ticket sales and television ratings. Smackdown was the A Show during Lesnar's original run. it had the most focus from Vince, closed WrestleMania, and it was on over the air television (UPN). WWE literally gave HHH a fake fucking WCW belt to placate him while Lesnar continued to be the real world champion on SmackDown.

RA SmackDown is why I don't understand people who say the RA era sucked. SmackDown was fucking great from like 2002-2005, when John Cena became the face of the company and moved to Raw.

Late 2002 sure, it was a sloppy mess until after Summerslam that year. 2003 was mostly solid. 2004 shit the bed when they lost Lesnar, Wight and Angle back to back and the midcard took a huge hit with releases and Raw drafts. 2005 was a definite improvement.

No, one title. If you have two world championships it devalues one, this ensures the belt always goes last. You can make up for the amount of talent on the roster with more midcard titles and elevating the prestige of the intercontinental title

Keep the brand split but have the Undisputed belt work over both shows. Smackdown was fine when the US title was the unofficial top title during Cena's run with it, so you don't need the top title turning up to both shows every single week.

Totally agree with this. The whole point of the IC title was to create a belt that features "the next main event guy". Something they can hold and defend to set them up as a potential rival for the main title or take it. Changing that causes so many problems because there is no natural progression to introducing new people into the main event scene. It's cool to have things like MiTB or RR wins to quickly elevate someone, but the IC belt being prestigious also allowed for long term build ups of people. I especially liked when a guy like Macho would go full out and claim the IC title was the real belt to hold. That sort of inter-fed "I make the title, the title doesnt make me" shit is great

Midcard belts are hard to work nowadays. People fixate so much on how someone deserves to be "the guy" that they have trouble appreciating them. And whenever a guy with potential does get it, it's almost seen as an insult because it's like an official acknowledgment that the wrestler in question isn't a main-eventer. I think part of the reason we have NXT instead of letting people work their way up the card as they improve is because the wrestlers have fragile egos and they'd rather be the big fish in a small pond over in NXT than a midcard champion on Raw or Smackdown. Cena's open challenge was the last time it felt important.

Now that we have basically zero world champions, it seems like the perfect time for the midcard titles to shine. But I don't know what kind of shock therapy you'd need to make them prestigious. Roman, Brock, and Cena are the only people who could really "elevate" them. I guess you'd just have to give them more attention, add some longer title reigns, and hope people start to enjoy it.

Well ideally, you would have WCW Monday Nitro and then Smackdown as the two brands, with one WCW Title for Nitro and one WWE title for Smackdown. Then you have Goldberg Lesnar as your two top guys, concluding their pushes by having someone go over them to win the belts.

Nope. Goldberg was declining in interest by the time he dropped the belt to Nash. After the DDP match aired for free on Nitro, it was all downhill. At least, for his first run.

He ran through all of his interesting opponents by then and didn't really have a personality. Had they kept the belt on him, I don't think the ratings change that much aside from maybe the Hogan rematch.

Brock had all of his big money matchups blown on free TV, he faced Hulk Hogan, Rob Van Dam, Ric Flair before he won the belt, had those been saved for title defences without a brand split he would have easily drawn as much as Hogan. Goldberg if he had left WCW before Russo got their and simply went to Japan instead could have done Hogan numbers too. Jericho was booked very weak and never really got treated like a main eventer with his momentum always undercut when he was mega over, the fact he's nearing the 200k mark still is very impressive i doubt he would have been at Brock or goldberg level at all, but he could have easily been in the 300k mark, not a top draw but upper-tier draw.

- Hogan politics and buries the Jericho Goldberg feud at Fall Brawl 1998
- Nash politics and buries Goldberg at Starrcade 1998
- Finger poke of doom to get Hogan at the top again buries Goldberg more
- Sting buried at Starrcade 97, so he never had a meaningful feud with Goldberg
- Savage never feuded with Goldberg
- Bret Hart was buried he didn't face Goldberg until 1999, years after he was already ruined
- Flair never faced Goldberg either
When Goldberg had the belt they were still shoving Hogan in the main event over him, he could have been so much bigger than he actually was

They already tried to push that dimeless no talent, Austin vs Rock vs HHH was marketed for Survivor Series 1999 and it did over 200,000 less buys than the previous year. During that month Triple H headlined each of the 4 raws leading up to the event and every main event he was in lost a significant amount of viewership for his match. Nobody ever wanted to see gaytch, at most people would have accepted the Rumble-WM2000 run where he headlines three shows and jobs out to Rock, but nothing more then that

The fact they bring him around every so often for a match the past years is proof of that. Even despite all this absolute fucking carny shit he's still incredibly over and that truly says a lot. Had this guy had the wrestling ability of a Bret Hart or Benoit he'd easily be GOAT and it wouldn't be close desu. He wouldn't have ever even needed much mic work because his wrestling ability and powerful aura alone would speak for itself. It's criminal that Bret/Goldberg happened so late.

Goldberg's problem was always in the "developing a personality" department. His recent WWE run and feud with Lesnar proved that he could develop one. However, when you come in and run through everyone, there isn't really anything you need to work on because you're perfect right out of the gate. Having a kid he wanted to wrestle in front of, though, gave us something to latch onto.

This is why wrestlers spend years paying their dues in the first place.

I didn't necessarily mean technical as in the moves and such. More so how good Bret and Benoit were in every regard to in ring work such as being able to lead a match, being able to make the other guy look good, being able to go 1 hour and not get gassed etc. Those guys could pretty much do it all. Goldberg was definitely very limited but what you said before still definitely checks out correct.

Booker t never drew a god damn dime you stupid ass coon. RVD was mega over in 2001 and he was the only one hurt by hhh’s reign. You could argue jericho too but that was in 2000/2001 and was more about behind the scenes power struggles between the pro-jericho camp which consisted of rock/stephanie/vince and the anti-jericho crowd which was hhh/austin(who was a mark and didn’t want anyone that had huge babyface potential pushed)hayes.

This was back when the brand split was much more solid and wrestlers rarely ever appeared or interacted with the other brand outside of major PPVs. Everyone got used to it after like 2 months. IIRC the main complaint was Triple H was just GIVEN the World Heavyweight Championship rather than winning it in a match.
