As a black wrestling fan growing up I really didn't see representation of myself in prominent positions within the industry. Black wrestlers were often portrayed as lackeys or no better than mid-card status. Bear in mind this was the 80s, 90, and 2000s. Thankfully, times have changed and this picture is indicative.
Bianca Belair is the first African American woman to hold the Women's Championship for over 200 days. Montez Ford is a star on the rise who oozes charisma. I fully expect he will be WWE Champion one day.
This picture may not mean much to some outside of a couple dressed up. But to me? I see something else.
Black excellence.
Pure. Unadulterated. Unfiltered. Sophisticated. Swagadocious. Black Excellence.
Proof that we can reach the top of the industry and maintain. Proof that we appeal to all crowds. Proof that we are marketable.
Proof that we're everything people thought we couldn't be in this industry.
And I'm here for every single second of it.
