The idea of turning Stone Cold heel wasn't necessarily a bad or unrealistic thing, he'd always had some heelish aspects to his character.

Stone cold beat everyone, and then he beat everyone teaming against him.
And he was about to beat the rock, the hottest face in the biz, for a second time at mania.

The timing and the manner of the heel turn were absolutely correct.
How he was booked AFTER, you can complain about.
But even then I'd argue it was good.

The problem with Austin's heel turn was mostly bad timing and no credible challengers. Without Rock to feud with, his only real opponent left was Triple H, and for some stupid reason they made them a tag team and had them feud with Undertaker and Kane for months. It felt like an obvious band-aid for the booking since they had no built up babyfaces left for months.

Invasion and Austin's heel turn were so bad it plummeted wrestling's value and popularity. They didn't want to buy out the contracts of many WCW guys but hindsight is everything. The business they would have done would have more than paid off that investment. We could have easily had a whole year of WCW vs WWF/E full of dream matches sprinkled throughout the year, culminating at Mania. It probably would end with some nWo and DX joining forces shit to end WCW and WWF both, uniting the rosters and ending the grudge but hey, it would be better than to have WWF just win.

In fairness I don't think the company actually thought this, Austin pitched for them to turn him because he thought it. He's got a bit of OCD and thought he wasn't 'fresh' anymore but it couldn't have been further from the truth, if anyone was burning out somewhat it was Rock.

Heel Stone Cold that worked would of been dimes but they had no one to replace him with and the normie mutt fanbase this board licks boots of everyday would always reject it because they can only like one guy and one guy only, plus “muh blue collar man working for muh evil corporation”. Wrestling fans are well known for their lack of respect for nuanced storytelling, but also Vince and many other promoters have a lack of respect for it too. Wrestling is a ‘tard’s sport, and people realized that around this time and moved to different shit. And now they have to deal with the fact that MMA is uncool/ice cold now and they won’t have a replacement this time around because of the pussification and stagnantion of the world.
