The gimmick got over so strong with the debut and they had no real main event talent to follow it up. Barrett was so far away from being a true main event talent that he couldn't feasibly win the title and was nowhere near Cena's level, even as tired as Cena was in 2010. If they'd had a Heyman around at that time, they could've pulled it off like that but they didn't have any real draw behind the group. The matches weren't very good, the talent wasn't ready, and the gimmick got pretty tired within a few weeks. The Shield is an example of a young group that actually worked because of talent and getting protected. Nexus had none and got zero.
