>>7734297The idea of the Nick Patrick/Bret Hart ref controversy was designed for two reasons:
-Cash in on the montreal screwjob because bischoff knows "controversy creates cash"
-have a storyline to set up the rematch because they wanted to milk the feud
Rematches are the same thing as a movie sequels: why wouldn't you milk a successful thing for more money? You just have to do it very carefully
Also in 1998 Hulk Hogan was not ready to retire
People talk about the finish like it was supposed to end with Sting squashing Hogan and Hogan fades into the sunset... But that wasn't going to happen. There was still lots of money to make with Hogan. Sending him off to the WWF in 1998 would have been TERRIBLE business.
the idea behind the Goldberg vs Hogan rematch was better:
Goldberg beats Hogan clean,
Hogan claims he's retiring and running for president,
Goldberg mows down NWO Wolfpack and NWO Hollywood for the rest of the year,
it takes a screwjob involving Bam Bam Bigelow, Disco Inferno, Scott Hall, a cattle prod, and Kevin Nash to finally beat Goldberg
Its all an elaborate work to literally hand the title back to Hogan
Goldberg has to go on his path of revenge to get the title back
But then Goldberg got hurt and while they ran with Hogan vs Flair, crowds turned on Flair and started cheering Hogan
They should have come up with a better more elaborate way to build to Sting vs Hogan 2
And hogan knowing that Sting was a druggie, he probably didn't want to sell for Sting like he was supposed to
He sold for Goldberg
