Really it was the monster aura that propelled him so quickly in his early days (the fucking Giger style smoking helmet was the coolest thing i'd ever seen in wrestling). By the time he made it to WWF he was slower and he never adapted to the sports entertainment style. Watch his stuff in NJPW and WCW and he is dimes. He still had some good matches with guys like Inoki and Misawa later in the 90s but really his best work is before that.
