They wanted him to turn heel because they already hated him and didn't like the optics of AEW ignoring the fans. There was no actual reason to hate the guy in the first place other than him leaving the elite which smarks took as a personal attack .

Except for him going full showbiz to a crowd that doesn't want that sort of thing and then instead of actually working with that, just... didn't. And instead favoured heatless attempts to get over in increasingly stupid ways (and trying to get his wife involved, fucking burning table) over turning heel and breaking the stip that single-handedly doomed him to the midcard forever. This is why no one liked Cody's late AEW run, it was just nonsense bullshit attempts to get over something NO ONE wanted.
