Kenny's reign was Dec. 2020 - Nov. 2021. The first part of his reign drew like dog shit ratings wise, it took the biggest WWE names possible in Bryan and Punk coming over to uptick the ratings.

Kenny’s ratings the first half of title reign were terrible. It didn’t pick up until the second half. Omega was the champ when dynamite got 1M viewers 14 times but his average viewership total over the course of his reign was 750k - which is only higher than Mox. Hangman’s average amount of viewers was 965k the highest average of all the aew champs and he averaged the highest demo of all the champs. The truth is punk never had a shot as champ to see his drawing power because he got kwab’dwith injuries.

It'd be absurd if we didn't have a long-spanning example that nobody wanted to tune in to see Kennetty's shitty reign, but we do, so Danielson was the draw and Kennetty was a non-factor

Just because someone pops a rating initially, doesn't mean they're a sustainable draw
Punk was doing good quarters, but they are doing as good without him. Last night Dave also doubted he was going to come close to drawing what he did for his first PPV back.

AEW won't ever go mainstream because the mainstream market only cares about presentation and can't afford higher tiers of cable. So WWE, with it being on basic cable (and FOX, which you can get with rabbit ears) and being very flashy but empty, is what appeals to the mainstream.

You could put Cena and the Rock on AEW next week and still sit around 1.5m at best. AT BEST.

the problem is that it was a novelty due to CM Punk coming back. The novelty was wearing off. The PPV buys weren't going to be as high the 2nd go-around. Punk's body was breaking down. Guy was on a very light schedule compared to WWE. Yet he had two huge injuries. You can't build around him wrestling. He was botching it up. Add in his volitile personality and you're setting yourself up for disaster. Okay, so you kick out the Elite/Hangman to appease Punk. What do you do when he gets pissed off at MJF for shaking his hand properly at a show? What happens when Darby Allin get on the wrong side of him? You can't just get rid of everyone else for Punk. If he was like 25 with this drawing level, you could argue that it's worth it to stick with him over the elite. But at his age and with his physical condition, it's not.
