I have a feeling they didn't really have an ending in their minds while booking the seasons as they went on - they were good as small "season" stories but the big picture was always the aztec tribes and something related to Aerostar because he's some space traveller or whatever

I still enjoyed it more than any wrestling show in the last 20 years, mostly because it didn't take itself seriously and was presented more as a tv series/action movie than a "MUH REAL FIGHT LOOK IT'S ALMOST LIKE UFC" approach

That's what the makers wanted, yeah, but they couldn't get El Rey to give them more money, because it was a huge loss for them, and other networks / services didn't see it as a good prospect because of their bad numbers. Anyone who wanted to help them finish it and then continue making money would have to directly invest in or buy Lucha Underground, but then they would be inheriting their huge list of bloated contracts and pending legal issues.

Pretty much, the contracts fucked up Lucha Underground.
It's still the most fun wrestling-related thing I've seen in a long while, even commentary from Striker wasn't as annoying as usual and I could get behind Vamp autistically rambling about hooking the leg
it just felt like the characters actually had personality and a chance to show it unlike WWE/AEW

My favorite wrestling show of all time.
Seasons 1 and 2 were god tier, season 3 was good overall but that's when it started to fall apart, and season 4 sucked. As much as it hurt to see it go out the way it did, we should be glad it ended while there was still more good than bad.

Honestly I always thought this had a lot to do with it. Meltz is a shoot sperg and wouldn't even talk about the show because of the fact the matches were edited for tv. Modern wrestling fans are mouth breathing sheep who cannot formulate their own opinions and listen to Meltzer (and to a lesser extent Jim Cornette) and parrot eveything they say instead. It could be argued that Meltzer is a large part of the reason AEW even existed in the first place because he played as much of a part in getting Kenny and the Bucks over as they did themselves. If he had given LU the praise it deserved then his legion of mindless drones would have thrown their money at it and kept it afloat financially. Unfortunately most of them didn't even give a try because Daddy Meltz didn't like it, and the ones who actually did try it dropped it after the first season due to "lack of hype" (aka Meltzer effectively buried it by refusing to even discuss it). Maybe if LU name of of their wrestler's finishers after Meltzer he might have changed his tune.

Meltzer and B&V burying it every week was part of the reason why I canceled my Observer subscription. It was basically supposed to be Mortal Kombat mixed with lucha libre, but none of them have any video game background post the early 1980s, and were only capable of comparing it to American pro wrestling.

Lucha Underground was based beyond belief. Actual storytelling, people over sold everything, the high flying antics, etc. It was too good for this world.

I'd totally love to see a new promo pop up that is just like that, but have urban black gangs, yakuza, ms13 style gangbangers, etc, all vying over titles and shit. Like a Def Jam Vendetta type deal.

This show went down the drain in the second episode of season 2. Season 1 was short enough to cover up the obvious garbage that was always prevalent in the show: vanilla midgets...The vanilla midgets were hidden by the entire gimmick of the show etc but that only could have lasted so long eventually the vanilla midget effect would have seeped in and that's exactly what happened in season 2 ESPECIALLY when they started hiring the boring as FUCK white vanilla midgets from the typical indie feds here, the vanilla midgets from Mexico or whatever at least dressed up in fancy costumes and had some type of gimmick or they just didn't speak period, the vanilla midgets from the us and such had NOTHING bunch of boring faggots with literally zero gimmicks and didn't even have fancy outfits or anything, A handful of guys, the gimmick or the show, and it's short run time is what carried the show. It was eventually gonna turn to dogshit but it is what it is.

There hasn't been a guy who legitimately gets a Roddy Piper reaction time after time after Roddy Piper aside from Rave. Now we can say that he's not a great promo and he had to be carried in all of his great matches but he had it and it showed in every appearance. ROH banning the toilet papers has to be one of the stupidest decicions ever done in wrestling.
