Shibata is based but he's also just a midcarder, let's be honest. He had maybe the greatest match ever with Okada at Sakura Genesis but he still lost that match. He's never won the IWGP hebby.

If you go to Shibata's cagematch, you'll see that he's taken a lot worse losses than Orange Cassidy before.

No, he got forced into retirement. He never wanted to retire because he was red-hot in that match, things were going really well for him since coming back to NJPW and he would've almost certainly won the top belt at some point soon after that.

And what makes you think Shibata is any different? He's going to beat the shit out of OC and it's going to be a based match, simple as. OC, like Darby, is great at being ragdolled and selling well.

Shibata never wanted to retire and training young lions all day just made his resolve to keep going all the stronger. Cassidy's a safe enough guy to work with and could be the precursor to the Danielson match. The All-Atlantic title is a dead title right now anyway so a surprise Shibata reign would establish that Tony's willing to let non-AEW guys hold AEW titles which would help make the title a little more interesting since it won't feel like Tony refuses to let the title change hands unless it's to another AEW wrestler.

You do realise that Shibata is fucked up and can't wrestle, right? Why would he embarrass himself by getting blown up in a televised match against Pac when he can smack OC around for a couple of minutes before getting pinned after a surprise Orange Punch? A match against OC is far less strenuous and you know Tony is paying Shibata a small fortune for gracing AEW with his presence.

Why do modern wrestling fans accept all the situations that their favourite inept bookers present to them?
