The ring could be rigged with pyro explosives, mock land mines, "chemical weapons" which would actually be colored smoke, and other such things. I would hire stage magicians to develop innovative ways of working the audience with misdirection, worked props, smoke and mirrors etc.
Doing political stuff is impossible in today's climate because as Kanye West has just found out if you actually rock the boat, they will utterly destroy you. How about an asshole psychiatrist gimmick? There are lots of people who do "insane" gimmicks, so have a wrestler who tries to subdue them and take them back to the nuthouse. When brawling outside the ring, they can wrap their opponents in a straightjacket and beat them with a singapore cane while asking them questions about their childhood. Just imagine how a character like that could have worked with Sycho Sid?
