Austin cracking beers and kicking ass, Flair's elaborate clothes and big mouth, Foley shoot killing himself before your eyes are all gimmicks because they were entertaining wrestlers. I'd say there's still plenty of guys trying to build their gimmick, Miz has been trying for over ten years now but the difference is he's nowhere near as talented as the people mentioned before. Same goes for Seth, Drew, Roman, Kofi or really anyone that the E has pushed to the top in the last decade. The guys of today make Cena look like Roddy Piper on the mic because they've effectively been trained to be like HHH, himself a self-mark charisma vacuum. Guys like OC and really all of AEW were supposed to be an answer to this problem. Reject the programming, be yourself and actually interact with the crowd. But goddamn that company is run by an autistic retard and his HHH-wannabes and nobody who gets over stays on TV for more than two weeks. Guys like Sammy are just more of the same thing and his "cocky young man but also I cheated on my fiance" isn't cutting it because he himself can't cut it. OC does not have mainstream appeal because he himself doesn't have enough talent to get there. Theres gimmicks everywhyin wrestling still, just no talented wrestler anywhere.
