His problem with it was giving away the match on free TV, instead of doing it on PPV. If it had been the planned finals of the tournament, I'm sure Steve would have done the honors, and had a solid match to boot.

It's not like Austin had clearly lost his drawing power in 2002. He was still one of the cornerstones of the company and it was stupid to not make more money at a PPV. This was Vince clearly comfortable now that his competition was dead so he could go with his "design" rather than trying to focus on drawing and money.

Austin was obviously right in retrospect and at the time. Brock was out of wrestling within 3 years. Just handing him wins over GOATs wasn't gonna fix Lesnar's issue with wrestling.
