The right gimmick can expose or amplify your character and charisma, but it can't give you character you don't already have.
Another example of weird fashion is the Hulkster. Yellow bandana plus wifebeater shirt with a growing bald spot and handlebar moustache. Awful even in 1988, but look at that character brother.
