The WWE going PG had nothing to do with cutting back on edginess, and going TV-14 will never solve the creative issues within the WWE, because the problem isn't internal creative. It's external creative.
The TV networks run the show. Hate to say it but Fox books SmackDown, USAN books Raw, TNT/TBS books AEW. That's why the shows are all schizo and incoherent. Cooks in a McDonald's are ordering Gordon Ramsay around in his Michelin star restaurant, but Ramsay takes it because it pays enough money to sustain the business.

Which really highlights perhaps the biggest problem with pro wrestling.
The corporate structures have grown too big for their britches.
The WWE has become dependent on the TV networks and dependent on stocks. Without either, the WWE will default and be written off after a firesale of all assets.

I think chikara laid the ground work for a lot of the “wrestling is suppose to be fake and gay” ground work but realistically never had the reach to influence that many people.

Real men started watching UFC, especially now that it's so readily accessible on cable. No real athlete wants to do the pro wrestling schedule anymore, not when they can do MMA and get to do virtually nothing but train for 10x the attention and praise. No real money drawing talent wants to do all of the self-injuring flippy shit that smarks demand of wrestlers now. The only people left are the ones who struggle just to get over. They're the misfits of society who fell into wrestling because they have nothing else in this world that can really do to earn a better living. Normal people can't possibly enjoy wrestling anymore, how can they possibly try for a career in it?
