The Right ranges from Liberalism on one end all the way to Fascism on the other end. Whereas the Left ranges from Social Democrats on one end (almost as gay as Liberals desu) to Marxist-Leninists on the far end. Although I suppose if you are American you are acustomed to your country being so far right to begin with that Liberalism probably does look left wing to you.
