Why did Vince Sr. push this howdy doody motherfucker Bob Backlund for so long? I have a hard time believing anyone in New York liked this guy.

He was a legit shooter in an era when you needed your top guy to be able to win a real fight if anyone tried anything with them in the ring

Secondly, Vince Sr liked to book ethnic babyface for the different communities in NYC: Bruno for the Italians, Pedro Morales for the Puerto Ricans, Ivan Putski for the Polish.
Backlund was for the Irish.

That's why Hulk was named "Hogan". In Memphis he was named Terry "Hulk" Boulder and when he came to N.Y., Vince changed his name to Hogan and told him to dye his hair red. Holster said "I'll be a blonde irish"

Backlund had come up through the traditional ranks…worked his way around territories, big star in Missouri (where most of the NWA champs wrestled before being given the big belt…that’s why David Von Erich did Florida/Central States, to get the old guard approval…and then he dropped dead).

WWF still had good working relationship with NWA up until about 1983 (Bob wrestled Race/Flair in title vs title matches). After Bruno said no mas, Vince decided to look for a legit wrestler (a Brisco type without getting a Brisco) to wrestle the champ vs killer heel with manager style that drew in the northeast.

Bob was over, but by 1983 fans had tired of the long reign and act, MTV was here, and Jr. took over and wanted the territories and mainstream star.

Yes, after Hogan won the title…Bob stuck around for a short stint. Vince wanted him to start complaining about the loss to Sheik, Hogan taking his spot, and dye his hair black. Take on a new manager after smacking around Arnold Skaaland.

He refused, went to Pro Wrestling USA for a while, then disappeared outside of autograph signing and independents.

Look the guy was clearly weird. Standing outside WWE/NXT events in New Orleans getting signatures for some petition off camera isn’t normal. But my understanding is when he came back, they wanted unhinged Backlund but he couldn’t dial it down to an 8 and stay on script/storyline. Tried to make him a manager and it failed because he’s a shitty mouthpiece and kook.
