Here's the reality: this "losing on your first match back" shit is something the sushis are conditioned to. It doesn't work as well for burger audiences. They've been conditioned by years of WWE that, if you lose like that, you're a nobody. And we've got past examples of where it leads in the case of AEW - Ruby Soho losing early to Britt then being shuffled onto Dark. Now I'm sure someone's going to say "b-but Ruby was a bit shit". And they'd be right, however Saraya is even more shit. Everyone with a brain knew she'd be shit before she was signed. She wasn't that great back in the day (the standards were much lower than now), and hasn't wrestled for years. By booking people like that you are hoping fans gravitate to them in spite of them being shit, because they've got name-value from the E, or charisma, or a great look, or whatever. It's actually the same gamble they took when they force-pushed Britt during the company's first year.
Now you can argue that Saraya shouldn't have faced Britt in her first match. That they should have given Saraya someone who could have carried her more in-ring and wouldn't matter as much if you beat them, like Shida or Deeb. Or you can argue that they should have just booked someone that Saraya could beat dominantly for her first match back. However that wouldn't have been seen as as big a match, and therefore less suited to a pay-per-view card.
You can also see the probable booking future booking plan for this. Beating someone as important as Britt, clean, should be a path that leads to a title shot. And in that title match with Hayter, you can have Hayter do what Britt couldn't and beat Saraya. And jealousy from that leads to the inevitable Hayter-Britt feud.
