The fact that he's ostracized himself from people the same way at every job he's ever had indicates this. Situations happen to Phil that normal people wouldn't see as a big deal, but in Phil's head it's a huge deal, and it becomes a bigger deal over time. Phil's conscious, his moral fiber screams at him, HEY, YOU'RE RIGHT, YOU'RE FIGHTING FOR JUSTICE, YOU'RE DOING THE RIGHT THING, about stuff no one gives a fuck about. That gap between his conscious and what he feels he has to do and reality is his mental illness. He just can't help it. If he wasn't already a rich bastard you'd feel sorry for him. All the tattoos don't indicate the best impulse control either.
