It's the exact same thing that happens nowadays. The top Japanese promoters know how to use foreigners extremely well and make them look like megastars, especially to their own audience. And the skills required over there to get over are not 1 to 1 with the skills required to get over here.
Bronson Sneed was a joke and JONAH is drawing Jap dimes easily. Part of it was that they rightfully got him to get rid of a lot of his cringe shit and just act like a simple Vader-like, as well as better presentation in general, part of it is that the audience in the arenas is just automatically more impressed and awed by it (And their reactions carry on to us). I'm not saying he's anywhere near as good as Steve Williams, but the reasons are the same.
