The weird thing with Kobe is people just omit the fact that from 03-08 he was universally disliked by everyone but the Mexicans in LA. I think whatever motherfucker came up with the Black Mamba advertising campaign and his Olympic games saved his career.

Even at the start, Kobe wasn't much of a personality because he was Larping as Jordan and quiet. If anyone watched in early 2000, they'd tell you Shaq was the personality of the team. Allen Iverson was the player everyone wanted to be and the coolest guy, while Vince Carter was the one with all the gifts people wished they had.

Shawn Michaels fits if you think about it.
He was heavily backed by Vince to be the top guy as a babyface, even though crowds mostly didn't like him and even actively booed him as a face.
WWE has gone out of their way to manufacture Shawn's legend, and even his in ring skills, to be larger than life compared to contemporaries that may have been more deserving.
Everyone hated 90s Shawn except for the Kliq and Vince.
Shawn shamelessly copied his gimmick from the Rock n Roll Express.
Shawn was babyface champ in the mid 90s was a massive anti-draw. Shawn was booed, while his heel opponent Sycho Sid was cheered.

The only people that hated Iverson were boomers and older players because they thought he was a "Young punk". Iverson was the most popular player after Jordan in the late 90s for good reason.
It's not even up for debate. Look at how many players stole his look and swag. He basically popularized the crossover. The only reason he's not looked at more fondly is because Stern made his personal goal for Iverson to not be the face of the NBA.
The NBA suffered because of this and didn't really come back to fruition until 2008 when the Celtics had the Big 3, LeBron was becoming the most-exciting player in the league, Dwight was ascending and Kobe was in his second run.
