Adam Cole's problems began earlier in March when Adama was diagnosed with a staphylococcus infection after a staph.

The infection, which Cole contracted while in Mexico, required surgery. Cole then returned to the U.S., where he underwent another surgery. On March 27, Adama told Stars and Stripes, “I was just really sad. It was my first day training at the [AEW] training center, and I was just really angry. I was on the mend and was on my way back to being a good student of AEW and a good student of pro wrestling again, and then I got really sick again.”

Cole could not wrestle for two months after his second surgery. He also took extended time off in 2017 when he tore his anterior cruciate ligament in early 2017.

While Cole's rehabilitation was going well, Adama says he "came out of the anesthesia" for the first time and "saw all the blood." A nurse suggested Cole move from the hospital bed to a chair, and at the time he said he couldn't think of anything that made him angrier
