According to wrestling trainer and historian Al Snow, wrestlers who weren't good enough to make a living wrestling and had to get real jobs were called "job guys". Some of them would make extra money putting people over at TV tapings. Eventually "job guys" became "jobber" and "job" became a verb meaning to lose the match.
