Been watching some old deathmatch stuff. Mostly CZW, FMW, XPW, JCW, and IWA. Since there doesn't seem to be one clear answer, I want to ask the board: Who would you consider to be the greatest deathmatch wrestler of all time? I'm thinking either Onita or Terry Funk.

Terry is goated period. His handful of death matches is probably the least interesting part of his career.

Purely for death matches I think Onita got the most mileage out of them. His top tier selling and fantastic comeback are amplified by the all the gimmicks and gore.

Honorable mention to Jun Kasai, a bit more botchy than the rest of his peers. But just a charming dude whose also nuts.

For American indies. I'll be honest I haven't watched a lot of IWA-MS. So my frame of reference is just CZW, OG XPW and a couple of carnage cups. Umm.. Danny Havoc?

2 of the best guys from the golden era and two of the best guys from the modern era. 2 Japs and 2 Gaijin. The real shame is we will probably never see Gage wrestle Kasai again. Gage probably can't leave the country and I doubt Kasai wants too.

i never really liked pure deathmatches, blood, cheese graters to the balls etc. i liked shoot chair shots to the head, slams onto concrete, off the top rope through multiple tables and great crumple physics where the guy just looks dead. sabu fit this for me, but i liked the awesome vs tanaka matches in ecw, both of those guys just giving eachother CTE was based

Necro is another guy, like Funk, I don't immediately think of them as a deathmatch guy.

If I'm putting together a best of Necro, it's going to be a lot more of him stiffing the shit out of indie darlings and his weird non BJPW appearances in Japan than it's gonna be death matches.

He's been great lately though. Everytime i see him he seems like he's getting stronger. When he first came back and had that match with hoodfoot, he looked really rough, but since then we can see him getting healthier each time. He's been working for XPW, JCW, CZW, AWR, and a few others.

I'm not sure personally because he did do deathmatches in FMW and BJPW and some of his ECW stuff was definitely violent enough to qualify. Still, I always considered him the GOAT of hardcore wrestling as opposed to full-on deathmatch specialists.

Well he has been in the news recently...got arrested with a LOT of drugs. Before that, I heard he basically got blacklisted for getting all fucked up and assaulting some merch girl. Some of that is just rumor though, to be fair. He is definitely looking at some serious drug charges though.

Off the top of my head there's the Joe match that's on youtube. His entire ROH bunch. If you can torrent I think 2007 BOLA from PWG he has a match with Nigel. But for a good four years every little indie would book him against all the top indie guys.

In Japan he had a match with Tanaka in Zero 1, and made an appearance in IGF where he had a match with RVD of all people.

I’d have to say Matt Tremont. The only grand slam Deathmatch tournament winner, the first guy to do an exploding deathmatch with Onita in the states, and pretty much singlehandedly carried deathmatch wrestling on it’s back when it was at it’s lowest. He might not be a moves guy but he’s great at everying else from psychology to selling to timing to cutting promos with a boatload of charisma to boot. He is the bridge between legends like Terry Funk and Onita to guys like Danny Havoc and Nick Gage Basically a deathmatch Dusty Rhodes.

Wrong. He kept deathmatch alive during it’s weakest period by drawing dimes, which then allowed it to draw even more dimes in the later 2010’s to now, where deathmatch has pretty much been the main subgenre for indie wrestling. None of that would have happened without Tremont

That’s why I said pretty much in my first post. But he was “The Guy” for the majority of the 2010’s, when CZW was still the biggest company doing deathmatches, even while DJ Hyde was slowly killing CZW, and guys like Drake, Danny Havoc and Masada were going overseas.
