I think you're misreading the purpose of the angle. If Regal were gone, he'd just be gone. TK wouldn't even bother to write him out. As far as I can recall, AEW has yet to give an actual send-off to anyone who was leaving. The closest they came was Cody working one match while not under contract to drop the TNT title to Sammy, but even he wasn't gone for certain at that point (it would be another three weeks before negotiations broke down). People *thought* Malakai was being given one, but then he ended up coming back.

As I interpret it, the purpose of the MJF sending Regal to the hospital was primarily to get MJF solidly back into the camp, and secondarily to give motivation to Danielson for their feud when it happens.

What business did he have to do on the way out? Bret was a completely different situation: he held a title that needed to be dropped.

Besides, if he were leaving, there was no reason for him to be on the show this week. He could have simply left after Mox told him to "run away and never come back" last week.

I think that's why he wasn't at Dynamite last week. No, not due to a movie, but because they were trying to cobble together a storyline. It didn't work. Was really disappointed. It seems like everyone AEW "builds up" fizzles out as soon as they win a belt. Wardlow had this happen most recently too.
