It was based because tv matches were short and there was crazy shit happening backstage, outside of the arena, compelling stories being told throughout the night with larger than life characters involved in various vignettes. Now you have vanilla midgets putting on overly long choreographed performances without even having storylines for most parts attached to them other than bland vanilla me better than you!

Besides some of the other points already raised, you have to realize that this came off the heels of the absolute dimes repellent known as the New Generation era. You went from hokey ass gimmicks that were outdated upon arrival hoisted upon wrestlers that didn't fit them to wrestlers being allowed to be something resembling themselves on national TV. There was a sincerity to it that made people buy into it even if they'd known for years at that point that the business was a work. It's hard to explain if you weren't around for it, but even if you were it was kinda strange to see wrestling taken seriously form the last time as it was reaching unprecedented levels of absurdity.
