Just what I prefer. I think Japan has better in-ring action, which, ultimately, is 95% of the appeal of wrestling for me. The show structure helps since I don't tend to care about backstage secments.
I am fairly unfamiliar with old-school American wrestling, but I have enjoyed what I've seen more than the modern stuff.

He had a masked gimmick for a while after his high point in the Jr. division, then left NJPW in '09. After that he was in AJPW and Wrestle-1 for a bit until becoming a freelancer. Now he mostly wrestles in GLEAT (and he's still pretty good!) but I think I've seen him on some AJPW shows as well.

Watched a great match a few weeks ago but I forget the exact date

It was Tenryu vs. Riki Choshu when Choshu was doing an invasion angle in AJPW (late 80s i think) with other former NJPW guys.
Was an awesome match, love how intense Choshu always was -- he just has great energy and even things that might be considered restholds look great and are interesting. Same goes for Tenryu, who held his own really well with that Funk Brothers training.

Would be cool to get some webms from it, again, wish I could give you the exact date but I didn't watch it online. It was the blow off match of that feud, I think late 80s or early 90s

Always slept on Choshu but I finally get it. He's just pure intensity, a real roughneck of a wrestler. In the same way that Muto was always slick and had his own weird electric style of movement, Choshu is like a more violent version.

Also does some great submission spots, he can do like 10 minute hope spots getting the sasori gatame in, impressive stuff.
Anyway, back to play King of Colosseum 2, I'll keep an eye on your thread brotherman

For me, pure "brawlers" like Choshu need specific opponents to really work (his match vs. Onita is basically comedy) but when it works it's killer. Tenryu's a perfect match for him.

Man, KBS hall is so fucking beautiful. It's really a shame none of the companies I follow run shows there. Shinjuku FACE is another one of those, I love that venue. Luckily GLEAT run most of their smaller shows there.

Just want to say that I just watched Okada vs Ibushi at WK14 for the first time and its a shame we can't have sound webms here because a webm of the Murder Ibu spot just wouldn't be complete without hearing just how fucking sickening those strikes sounded.

As someone who shares the fairly common belief that there should be more diversity in the length of modern NJPW main events I was surprised by how riveted I was by it. It honestly flew by for me, and I'm not a mark for either of them. Maybe its because its been a little bit since I've seen one of those types of matches and I would get diminishing returns from watching a bunch of Okada epics in a row.

Such a shame he got injured and likely blacklisted, Jay's reign was horribly let down by him not having anyone credible to challenge him and a program with Ibushi would have done a lot to make the reign memorable.

I wonder how far ahead of time they knew Jay would be returning to Japan. It feels like they made the obvious move of putting it on Jay to not bury him after being away for so long but found themselves with nobody who could credibly challenge or wasn't busy with another title.

I know they used him as the "break glass in case of emergency" challenger last year but Tanahashi could have had an amazing match with Jay. They could even have revisited the feud with Ishii; it would have been easy to transition from one feud to the other with a run in save when Jay keeps beating Tana after the bell. I was so pumped for Jay to finally get his schizokino title reign where he plows through a bunch of top babyfaces and slowly starts turning on everybody and eventually causes a full scale implosion, but fuck, this was such a waste of a reign. This combined with Ishimori going six months without defending the title after Despy was having the run of his life has really made the title scene disappointing for the second half of the year. I'm still optimistic for the future with the young guys coming in, hopefully the lull will be over after WK.

I would agree if Jay was a face but he's still a heel.
If they had turned him and he'd only had such lackluster people to work with, then THAT would be a major issue.

But he's done his work as a chickenshit heel champ, which is puro is absolutely nothing more than a transitional champ. That's what you do.
I really WISH they'd turn him face and give him the same kind of push they put behind Kenny but it's looking more and more like they're never going to do that, or maybe Jay himself wants to stay heel, I don't know.

Maybe that's the convention but this really was the time and place to break that convention. I don't see any readon why we couldn't have a meaningful title reign and beat a top guy or two, it would make Okada winning the belt back meaningful rather than perfunctory. They might as well have just kept the belt on Okada all year.
