MMA happened and guys like this got exposed. Beach muscles and height used to be enough to impress a crowd but now we know that someone with functioning strength and stamina will win 100% of the time. So modern crowds aren't into people looking ways they can't, they want to see people do shit they can't do.

Pretty much, yeah. Massive anti-draw through the 90s and the attitude era. Not a big draw at all during the early 2000s either. It wasn’t until all the real draws left did he become an actual attraction.

There are examples of giants and muscle freaks who flopped hard going back decades. Giant Gonzales for one. Big Show has never really drawn a dime despite years of trying. Lex Luger was a massive failure when they tried to push him to the moon. Ultimately it all comes down to if you're entertaining to watch. Ultimate Warrior was a freak who acted like a freak. Being huge gives you an advantage but lottery winners go bankrupt all the time.
