as for the societal issues, I don't know man it depends. you could argue that the typical rags to riches storylines for examples will always be socially relevant, or political conflicts (i.e. muhammad hassan, nikita koloff...etc), or even something that is genuinely lucid about the current state of affairs (kerwin white). these things will always retain a solid place in wrestling, because they are presented in an exploitative fashion as opposed to delivering a lecture. but i know that you're referring to the average twitterfag's understanding of "social issues", in which case I agree with you.
