Here's an interesting topic for debate: Was the big match between Hulk Hogan and Sgt. Slaughter at WM7 a good idea? Many have said that it was wrong for them to play on the Iraq war and to turn Sgt Slaughter into a traitor. Others look at it as a successful attempt to generate massive heat with the fans and the general public. So what does /pw/ think? Was it a high point or a low point?

Well, in addition to being tasteless even by pro-wrestling standards, and not being a very good match on account of Slaughter being over the hill, it was absolutely a business disaster for the company. They didn't move to the smaller venue out of security concerns, and I believe it also cost 'em their NBC deal at the time.

That said, I'm sure you can still find dipshits who'll come up with something to defend it on, even if they have to pull said defense completely out of their ass.

normally I would agree with you, but in this case it was not very well executed. For one thing, it killed Slaughter's credibility in a way that could not be undone. They had him turn babyface awhile after WM8 but it just didn't work. For another, there were way better guys to put in the main event at the time. Curt Hennig would have been a better choice, or even a rematch between Hogan and Warrior. Nothing against Slaughter but he was way past his prime. Also, they lost money on that whole thing due to moving to a smaller venue and pissing off NBC. Any business decision that loses money is probably not a good one.

And even in orofessional wrestling, you can only go so far with an angle before you take things from "oh, I wanna see that bastard get his" to "this is fucking shameful and I'd be legit embarrassed if someone caught me watching this".

Like, when they ran Nazi wrestler angles, they were doing that after the war was already over. Even the Muhammad Hassan angle would've been fine had they not gone full McMahon with it and had hooded terrorists under his command try to murder The Undertaker with piano wire like it's an episode of 24 or something.

I wonder if they could've brought Flair in even earlier that year. Piper really didn't have a match of his own, he was Virgil's corner against Dibiase but a better idea would've been to turn Piper heel and put him against Hogan. maybe by '91 Piper would've been more open to putting over Hogan?

That was because the gulf war ended in the middle of the angle. Regardless of what one's opinion may be of it, it would've surely done fine if the gulf war had ended a day later after WM 8

Rate this gay-ass fantasy booking:

Warrior beats Earthquake at the Rumble.
Rumble final three are Hogan, Slaughter and Savage (still a heel at this point)
Slaughter does something in the Rumble like trying to rip up an American flag or whatever, Savage goes "that's too far....", while he tries to stop him Hogan eliminates them both.
Savage slowly turns face on the way to Mania, faces Slaughter, loses via interference.
Hogan/Warrior is the main event, make it unsanctioned "BECAUSE NORMAL RULES COULDN'T CONTAIN THE DESTRUCITY BROTHER," ending is Savage and his goons (get him someone better than General Adnan as well) run for the 3-on-2 beatdown, Savage comes out and evens the odds, sends the heels packing, Hogan beats Warrior cleanish afterwards.
Summerslam main event is Hogan/Savage/Warrior vs Slaughter/Sheik/Another Goon

The problem was how they worked the match, the Slaughter-Hogan desert storm match they filmed at MSG a great old school brawl.

You made the actual main event match itself into an afterthought to continue a feud when that was not the point of wrestlemania at all, and you'd be rehashing a match that people had already seen, which is guaranteed business killer. I can see what you're trying to do by keeping savage in the mold, but this is just building up to a summerslam tag match.
In my opinion, it should have been Jake vs Warrior.
