I said it once before but the air started to go out when they botched the end of WK where Naito won the belt. He was giving his big speech to send everybody home happy then Kenta attacked which let the air out of the arena. Which then led to everybody thinking Shibata was going to come out to save him but then that didn't it deflated the crowd again. It oddly kinda killed Naito at the same time. There were more serious things that happened after that might've done more damage like the Evil run, age finally catching up to Tana or the Ibushi double title story and of course covid fucking up every schedule of the international guys. But that was sorta the first dent that started the downturn to me.

I think Gedo or Jado whichever one was the head booker underestimated how over Naito was at the time.

Also Ibushi getting injured, twice. Ospreay got injured and just fucked off to the shanky town of Strong for most of 2021, Okada not 100% through most of 2020/2021, Evil flopping, Jay White felt almost non-existent for nearly a year. Multitude of different things.
The truly cursed moment was when we were robbed of Naito vs. Hiromu, and it's truly been downhill from there. Kenta closing out WK was the tip of the iceberg.

I also feel like they botched the whole Ibushi thing pretty hard. He felt like a fourth wheel in the whole Double Gold Dash angle, won a G1 and challenged for the IC title (lol), first man to win the G1 twice but lost the briefcase in a convoluted two night WK booking mess, had a pretty good main event with Jay White, then have him become the face of the new belt lineage, gets BTFO with injuries twice.
Granted I don't think he was the most electrifying guy, but it's obvious they wanted to do SOMETHING with him, but everything felt so half hearted.

Also Okada parading the old belt only to throw it away was maybe the most tone deaf plot point I've seen in a wrestling company in years.
