Giving *more than 5 stars* out of 5 stars is such a stupid and meaningless thing. It's the main reason I've never paid attention to Meltzer's ratings. If your rating goes to 5, it goes to 5, full stop. If he really feels the need to differentiate particularly great 5* matches further, he just should make a "best of the best" all-time shortlist.

These two didn't work that out, unfortunately. The biggest stuff they did came 10-15 minutes before the finish. The near falls toward the end were getting less of a reaction as a result.

I intend on watching it with an open mind as I do any match I give my time to. Will has improved a lot and Kenny was hopefully given the level of direction he got with the Okada match.

But after 5 years of Dave overrating matches in New Japan and AEW that would have been snored out of any of the work rate promotions of the late 2000s, I think the skepticism is warranted.

I disagree with 95% of Meltzer's ratings (For starters, every Young Bucks match gets a maximum 3.5 stars from me), but this was a genuine 5 star match, in my opinion. Take it as you will.

Though now that I think about it, you won't experience it with my level of "This might be good I guess" if you keep being overhyped about it.

I feel like him going above 5 has resulted in every single match having inflated ratings. 3 stars used to represent a somewhat above average match. Now even shitty slow motion women's matches full of botches break stars all the time.

I suppose in an age where it’s easier than ever to see matches around the world the standard of going out of your way to see a match would drop. Heck of a lot easier to torrent a show than it was to have a pen pal mail you a tape.
