Contrary to popular belief today, adults always knew wrestling was a work. But there was debate over how much was a work, or about "that one time it was real." Working a believable style let the audience buy into the action and suspend their disbelief for a little bit, similar to the goals of an action scene in a movie: we all KNOW it's fake but everyone involved in the scene treats it as 100% real while it's happening, so the audience can buy in also.
