Cornette is unfortunately not a scholar so his thoughts are sometimes a little muddied. Wrestling is at its core a performance of pain and suffering and a mass delusion. The issue with modern wrestling is not that the moves are "unrealistic" (although there is a limit to suspension of disbelief), it's that the kids are not performing enough suffering and that no one is taking the acting seriously enough to allow us to believe in it. It's essentially like Marvel flicks, which constantly wink at you, quipping about that which they've just shown you and thereby deflating all of the impact it could have had if played straight. And the reason for that is just insecurity. They don't know if they have it in them to tell an emotionally touching story, they don't want to embarrass themselves, trying to act serious and falling flat, being vulnerable, being humiliated, so they make you laugh at their performance instead, like the kind of guy who makes self deprecating jokes because he's scared others will make them.
