Why was ECW the only promotion during the mid 90s to really tap into that alternative zeitgeist? Up until '97 WWF just felt stuck in the 80s.

Because WCW and WWF had real athletes who looked like wrestlers. Raven looks like a celebrity, not a wrestler. Show that pic to somebody who doesn't know who he is, no one would guess he's a wrestler.

I always love guys who make huge character turns in wrestling. Johnny Polo to Raven. Bob Backlund to the Mr. Backlund character. You have the opposite in Hacksaw Duggan and the Bushwhackers going from serious guys to comedy wrestlers.

There wasn't that many American promotions around. You had WCW, Smoky Mountain, USWA and that's about it.
