Mastery of the emotion doesn't mean to repress or suppress the emotion, its value or its intensity.
It means to express the emotion in a harmless way, without anyone being able to manipulate it but yourself.
This is why some people get angry over a friend's death, before they cry of sorrow. And why other people cry before they get angry. They deal with the process differently.
The way Jim talks about the death of Jay Briscoe sounds like he hasn't spoken about it at all with anyone since learning of the news.
It's a very natural response.
But just because other people don't respond the same way, or get feisty because they're recognising the way they feel but are trying to avoid it, doesn't make them lesser humans than you or anyone else.
Just means they're different.
