Musically, he branched off just as all the funk, soul, disco side of music was re-combining with rock, synth, and heavy metal, to form a genre called "post-disco" - a form of electro, funk, and rock. Old disco was just about dying, and hard rock, synth were about to explode, that's when Thriller came out with all the elements in one album. There're more elements to the phenomenon, but it's boring and long.
