He had neck surgery, but that was only one reason he left WWF in 97. Sid was notorious for burning bridges in every promotion he worked for. And yet he would eventually get brought back because, again, he was just that over.
Sid went to ECW in 99 and was over as FUCK. But he only stuck around a few months. Then he went to WCW and was one of their big stars, but it was dying days WCW by then. And of course he had that nasty leg fracture in early 2001 WCW that essentially ended his career.
Sid was 40 at the time of retirement and had a 14 year career, so not sure what you were expecting.
