NJPW's huge and recognizable brand was built thanks to Inoki, Choshu, Fujinami, Muto, Hashimoto and Chono. If Okada and co. were in NOAH they wouldn't draw.

I was watching the 1-18 show and Nakajima was so ridiculously over with the Noah audience it was unreal. Women were screaming his name in hysterics. Men were chanting for him to fight on every time he started to take damage. People where pressing against the barricade like they were just moments from jumping into the ring and personally save him. It is absolutely mind boggling how the Noah booking committee treats him like an irrelevant midcard act. If you want to point at what Noah is doing wrong that is a good place to start.

The booking committee in Noah is terrible. Just old out of touch men booking themselves to go over the only draws Noah has event after event. Mutoh(pbuh) got eyes on the product, CyberFight made the product look amazing, but then the matches actually happen and it is just sawdusted never was boomers waddling around the ring. With the CyberFight money they could afford to poach every dimeless pachinko hall promotion in Japan for their one good wrestler and build up a genuine threat to NJPWs hegemony.

Also ffs give the book back to Nosawa. At least he tried to to steer NOAH in the right direction before the boomers revolted and took the book from him.

Jumbo Lee Burbridge would absolutely make the jump for a paycheck. Plus you get Ram Kaicho with him and God knows NOAH could use some eye candy now that Jurina is gone.

I think a lot of NOAH’s fan base never saw them as a real promotion. It was just a way to have to continue living the 90s glory days or all Japan. Every star they tried to build didn’t work. They did everything right with Rikio and Morishima, but the fans never got on board. And once Misawa died most of the fan base checked out.
At this point they’re just drawing people who would watch any wrestling.

NOAH's problem is that it could never get its fan behind the guys it wanted them to get behind. They tried first with KENTA and Marufuji but the crowd just wanted Misawa and Kobashi.

They don't really need that many guys. Tyre Chad is based. He gets over with everyone I've shown NOAH to. He's pretty much the only guy who did, but only because everyone else looks like they're on their way to ozzfest 99. They need to get rid of the nu metal aesthetic shit.
There are some guys DDT could afford to send over, as well as some of the really promising rookies DDT let go. CyberAgent and Takagi could relaunch DNA as a development space that serves both promotions too.

Nakajima is pretty much the most over guy in NOAH and NOAH's most successful signing since they convinced him not to jump to NJPW. That said I think Nakajima is about to break from Kongo but what exactly he'll do after is hard to say. If it's going from Kongo to Jake Lee's new stable that'd be a huge downgrade for him.

Well in the mind of NOAH 2002 they had 4 potential options

>There were four top prospects in NOAH around this time; KENTA, Marufuji, Morishima, and Rikio. Two of them were really over but they were still the aces of the junior heavyweights and it took a while for them to get out of that stigma despite their amazing talents in the ring. Morishima was still not prepared to become the top guy and they also failed in completely cashing in on him as the next ace, he found better success in his time with ROH.
>In terms of wrestling talents, Rikio is the weakest of the four but was the chosen one in Misawa's eyes. The end result, Rikio's run as champion only lasted for 245 days and it really was a lackluster reign. Three successful title defenses, one of them is in the Tokyo Dome against Hiroshi Tanahashi, on paper it seemed like an exciting match up, the battle of the "young aces" of two different promotions, but its position on the show felt like a midcard match, with matches involving the veterans headlining over it. Even going over Mitsuharu Misawa in his third defense wasn't enough to salvage him and eventually Rikio dropped the belt to another old timer in Akira Taue who only served as a transitional champion to Jun Akiyama.

NOAH needs to carve out a consistent role in the marketplace and stick with it. They are too reliant on old guys, and worse, they aren't getting over any future stars with all the politics those old men play. Mutoh was dragged kicking and screaming to put over Kaito. I don't even like Kaito, but if that's your Ace of the future, fucking protect him. All the MMA bullshit, elderly wrestlers and crossover events are nice, but none of these things are sustainable. Zero-in on something you can do very well for a very long time and keep pushing that.

They never sold to Bushiroad. They sent Jado over to book NOAH into the ground hoping they'd sell but NOAH eventually told Jado, Suzuki-gun and Bushiroad to fuck off and sold to Lidet who was doing things right but the massive debts were too much for them and they sold to CyberAgent who merged DDT and NOAH into CyberFight which then spent like two years and most of their money paying off Noah's debts. If the CyberAgent deal never happened, NOAH probably would have died in 2020.

Every promotion faked their numbers in the 2000s. Dragon Gate was especially notorious for it but every promotion would often claim numbers that exceeded building capacities which is where the whole SUPER NO VACANCY shit came from and why you don't really see it anymore since promotions have to be a bit more honest with their numbers now. Doesn't stop them though i.e. Stardom claiming once to have outdrawn TJPW at Korakuen despite having more visibly empty seats.

That's one of their faults, they never committed to a guy, they probably expected miraculous numbers instead of stabilizing at good numbers and in the end they still had to rely on these guys they didn't want to originally commit, they totally screwed Rikio over for example, and back when everyone left NOAH, the fact that they survived is nothing short of a mriacle and there are a bunch of people that have said NOAH still exists because of Marufuji. Sugiura ended up bringing in good numbers and won Tokyo Sports MVP but after his title reign he got sent back to the midcard for several years until he got it back as a traitor part of Suzuki-gun despite him being as loyal to NOAH as Marufuji, realistically maybe even more so..

Yes, because he flopped. Japan, especially back then, was still very much in the HW/Junior split and the fans didn't buy Marufuji as a credible HW champion so the belt was quickly taken off of him. You're right that they probably could have committed more but the AJPW old guard was winding down so they needed to find something fast and when it failed they went back to what worked. They weren't really in a position to wait and see and you can argue that from day 1 they should have been building someone up as the next gen ace. I guess realistically they didn't have that guy though, especially after choosing wrong with Rikio.

Maybe Go and Finnerjima could have been the next gen aces but they a.) took way too long to get clues and b.) Misawa died which is when everything went to shit.

Kongo is pretty solid. Kenoh, Finnerjima, Tire Man, Kitamiya are all great workers.
Alejandro is still pretty good, but he could be better if he was able to get more experience working with other juniors outside of Noah. If he worked a program with Despy over in NJPW he could learn a lot.
Kaito has the look and they are willing to push him, but ironically enough he needs to work in a promotion that isn't going to push him so he can learn to get himself over.
Hijo del Dr. Wagner Jr. is based, and they should really bring his father over. During the Corona era they had the gaijin who were trapped outside the country send in tapes from shows they worked in their home countries. HdDrWJr. and Dr. Wagner Jr. sent in an amazing tag team match that really demonstrated how skilled they are as a team.
Yo-Hey has the look and charisma. He is a little sloppy but a lot of that can be traced back to his career getting derailed and being blacklisted by Dragon Gate for being a whistleblower.

The shows are still online, you can easily find them and see for yourself. The worst part they did was have KENTA challenge because that meant the main event was the same people that were fighting for the jr heavyweight not even one tear ago and while Marufuji had fantastic matches with Kobashi and Taue and Akiyama and had been heavyweight tag team champ only a year before, KENTA was heavily established as just a jr.
They clearly had time and in the end they still had to rely on these "flops" anyway and the company survived. It's the difference between NOAH and NJPW, Tanahashi didn't draw when he became champ either but the company showed trust and the company could get behind him eventually. NOAH was just greedy and were expecting their second generation to draw better than Misawa and Kobashi despite no smooth transition to them so they opted to go with old guys when Kobashi, Taue and Misawa broke down and they all flopped spectacularly. Misawa himself saw a huge decline in 2007 both as a wrestler and in drawing power.

They had the perfect opportunity to firmly establish him after many stop-start push by having him defeat kobashi at the dome. Instead, Kobashi beat him.

Compared to Rikio, Akiyama was more experienced, had bigger name recognition considering he did cross promotion events with njpw and all. He could certainly have been the bridge to NOAH's big four of the future without rushing them

In fact, Misawa seemed to take pleasure jobbing out Akiyama which is ironic considering he put over Akiyama clean in AJPW.

The Three Musketeers used to be invited on more mainstream tv shows and their Kanto region viewership ratings (where NJPW was more focused) were more than any other fed. That’s an outright lie though. NJPW, even during their darkest days, were drawing more than NOAH. NOAH did twice, came close a number of times (which was thanks to Muto and Hashimoto leaving), but they were never more relevant and bigger. By that time, NJPW was surviving thanks to its brand regardless of the poor talent and that bad booking, which tells you how big it is despite seemingly there’s a better fed in NOAH.

As for booking I would say yes if he had jumped ship to AJPW when Misawa first started trying to recruit him, but I honestly believe that Noah Misawa would have pushed him as his replacement.
