He had look and personality, and the confidence to pull it off. Imagine someone trying to do a "Van Dam" gimmick today and get it over. It could've easily been laughed off as a Glacier-tier shitshow.
ECW was the perfect environment for his gimmick and in-ring style. Basically a perfect storm. His style never really changed after that, and the only reason his character ever changed is because they couldn't write the ECW-style kino that brought him to the dance.
Despite that, he still got over. Really too bad he got caught with weed in that traffic stop. I can't remember if they put the title on Big Show first, but the moment they put the ECW title on Bobby Lastly was the moment I stopped watching wrestling for a LONG time.
