>>8824632Not everyone has a gimmick but They all had characters, which were distinct from each other with large personalities.
90% of modern wrestling characters are
>I LOVE WRESTLING I'M A FAN AND I WRESTLE REALLY GOOD LOOK AT MY MOVES.Some go as far as to add "AND IM COCKY".
Then the ones who do have characters try to be relatable and just like me, rather than larger than life.
Wrestling characters used to make fans go "I want to be like them."
Now fans go "I want them to be like me."
No more aspiration, just pure self insert. Even the wish fulfilment is degraded.
Steve Austin was wish fulfilment for everyone who's wanted to tell their boss to screw it, a big, burly redneck who lived over the top and could throw his boss's limo round in a forklift.
A Steve Austin today would be average height, average build, and come out and gripe about his anxieties, rent, and why can't Congress pass healthcare. Then a guy in a red baseball cap would come out, say something incoherent about him being a snowflake, then get called a boomer, get a limp slap and run away spluttering while commentary sell it like the edgiest thing ever.
