Why did he flop so badly and why does Tony Khan continue to treat him as some sort of special attraction when he fails to increase the ratings every time he's announced?

I don't think it really matters at this point who Tony makes World Champion. The ratings are staying stagnant regardless. 700-900k is the average number of their television audience and probably always will be.

Because with smarks, once you win the big one, it's unironically over. They love to fantasy book and hang on for the journey, but as soon as their favorite gets the title, they withdraw all support and move onto the next indy darling. See Bryan, Kofi, Seth, Hangman etc.

Tony is trying his hardest to keep MJF special, but that is only making him more forgettable and
he's actively sinking not swimming. The potential is there for a good heel champ, but like with Miz in 2011, it's just too early. He needs a good 3-4 years of midcard/tag title scene feuds to help him mature.

Once Hangman won the belt Tony started doing this weird thing where once somebody becomes world champion he books them like shit and they become one of the least important people on the show. I have no idea why Tony does this. MJF's reign was doomed from the start and I'm sure he knows it which is why he's been phoning it in. So of course it's been a flop. That promo where he called Tony a stupid fucking mark was probably how he 100% genuinely feels.

It's really that he is once again milking not fighting as a sell point, another fucking gauntlet for a challenger, one after the other, exactly what he did to get on top. There is no variety. Think he's actually going against Takeashit now which he should have been doing month before, gone through the roster and win cheap and cheating instead of "your local team bad" promos. Thats what tanked my interest.
tbf, He plays the cheating shit heel well but the program just makes him seem like he using it to avoiding the wrestling all together instead of a by product. Take on the first challenger, put next one through two hoops, the third through 3 ...that could have build it up better, now its just "Danielson has to wrestle 4 weeks winning"

This has nothing to do with smarks. MJF is being booked as just another guy on the show he's supposed to be the champion of. Instead of being a tweener or a babyface, which he absolutely needs to be at this point, he's stuck doing his utterly stale heel act because that's what Tony wants. You can blame smarks for a lot of things but you can't blame them for this.

This is what happened to Cody. Cody wanted to turn. Cody is on record saying the fans are never wrong. This is why Cody acted heelish at times. He gave the fans what they wanted as much as he could because Tony wouldn't let him turn

Consider that had he kept his mouth shut and was not injured, Tony Khan's plan was to make CM Punk wrestle through The Firm in order to get to MJF. Since it would have been his first proper title defense (there's no way Punk would lose the belt against The Firm) it's safe to assume that Punk would win that match, making his score 2-1 against MJF. Sure, maybe after Punk had his run with the belt MJF would be the one to take it off from him, but him getting the title this early definitely wasn't in the initial draft of Tony Khan's plans. Especially when you consider that MJF's whole shtick since he became an upper-card heel was that he'd do his best to have the belt in 2024, when his contract is up. Now that he has the belt 6 months early, the timing of the storyline is out of whack and it has lost its potency.

It's a good thing to point out that AEW builds up its challengers better than their title holders as well. With Kenny, it was about waiting for Hangman to be ready to hold the belt. With Hangman it was about CM Punk to be ready to hold the belt. With CM Punk it should have been about waiting for MJF to be ready to hold the belt, but the trigger was pulled too early because of All Out, and now MJF is a title holder without a main contender.

You can also add the improvements in WWE as a factor to this as well. MJF saying he'll fuck off to where Cody Rhodes is definitely didn't help AEW when WWE was, for the first time in a while, putting out their best programming in the form of The Bloodline and other stuff. Also it's a bit of "calling his bluff" as well: AEW is still there with Cody gone, and it'll still be there if or when MJF decides to go, so saying "you'll miss me when I'm gone" lowered MJF's credibility as a title holder.

The obvious problem is that Tony has new toy syndrome and keeps needing new bells and whistles to pop ratings, so MJF, having been there for years and being a rookie with no name recognition outside of the AEW fans already, is having a harder time competing against all those bells and whistles Tony has been hiring.

Honestly, though, Tony needs to eat shit on this one. He needs to have MJF defend the belt and keep being in segments that have ratings go down, because that is how you establish people. You have the rest of the people getting some amount of people in, and let them see MJF and get used to him as a champion.

If MJF gets immediately kwabbed because Tony can't STAND watching the ratings dip, then he's kicking the can down the road. He's delaying the problem and continuing to get himself in these kinds of situations. The MJF thing could even end in failure, but it's better to risk it and have it fail than give up on it and then have to start all over again. Tony needs to, for once in his life, actually prove he can establish new stars. I don't care how rich he is, a company can't eternally rely on an endless barrage of yummy debuts.
