Yes, he was that too.

But in the years when he was most active I saw many, many people wearing HHH shirts at shows he went to and I've met several people over the years who list him among their favorite wrestlers.

Yeah, but to what extent? Not within the realm of Austin or Rock, but who is? So it seems unfair to say. The years of pushes and world titles Triple H has gotten does not match his drawing power. Maybe he earned his first 2 world titles, he only got the rest because he married the bosses daughter. No other way around it.
