Why can't modern wrestling get tournaments right?

Every time WWE or AEW decides to have a tournament, they just throw a bunch of random faggots into matches on their show, most of them in the undercard and a lot of the matches happen on the same show so absolutely no one gives a shit about it and most of the times there's like one big name in it so everyone already knows who will win it.
Why couldn't one of the two make a tournament that lasts for several months and only have the brackets face each other as the main even of their weekly show and maybe later the semis could even get a ppv match out of it? Maybe the first match would be kind of throwaway but you put big names in it to get people interested in the match and after that, the following matches will all have weeks worth of build up and promos they could do for their upcoming match, making it a little less predictable who will go over, especially if you don't put jobbers in it.
Tournaments now are just used as throwaway lazy booking excuses to get someone to hold the vacant title or quickly set up the obvious guy as the next number one contender. You could milk the fuck out of a good tournament instead of booking it like someone with the attention span of an tik tok addicted zoomer.
