I can't speak for Australia but in NZ to get the cable package that has ESPN it costs an extra $35 a month on top of whatever you're paying for basic cable.
I can't imagine AEW is getting any real money from this deal and I wouldn't be surprised if these shows get less than 1000 viewers live

No you can't because if you knew anything about this you'd know Disney and ESPN+ also have a deal that shows WWE to other pacific regions. But you don't which is why you keep making threads like this. International deals like this for TV in sub markets happens all the time. International Netflix for example has shows that Americans would associate with HBO, NBC etc. All this shows is that Disney is still interested in finding more programming in the sports related genre for ESPN+ just as they were when they wee outbid by Peacock for the PPV rights to WWE.

Disney also owns a controlling interest in Hulu which showcases their "competition" through out, including Fox's Smackdown and USA's RAW. They could buy it out at any moment and don't because of several strategic content reasons the first of which is they like to use it as a dumping ground for projects that are not "Disney friendly" but are made by them. Like the horror movie "Barbarian". Again yiou don't know what the fuck you're talking about because you get most of your insight from someone like Meltzer or wrestling "journalists" like the Thurston. This is why actual journalists collectively laughed when it was reported that the Saudis were buying WWE overnight before WWE had even announced the legal team and bank that were going to oversee the sale.

No it is not "similar". The basics of each and every deal are not similar. To show this all you have to do is look at the web of rights to the US broadcasts of Smack and RAW. Peacock purchased the WWE network which gives it sole rights to the entire WWE library in America. Meanwhile Smack and RAW are signed exclusively to Fox and USA respectively. Which are both shown and highlighted on Hulu which is majority owned by Disney. This is why you get the weird circumstance that Peacock has to wait 30 days to air episodes of RAW and Smack, but can show the PPV's and entire catalog, while Hulu can air the episodes next day but only for one week with limited back catalogs.

Disney airs NFL games, and they are going to air XFL games. They air Baseball and they air Basketball. Disney paid big for UFC fights, but they still cover Bellator.

HBO that is owned by WB. A huge direct competitor no? It doesn't matter. The horror movie didn't have a place on their streaming platform so they sold the rights to a platform that would showcase it. This happens all the time. WB just stopped its deal with Netflix where they were producing content for that platform and letting Netflix use their IP. And that had nothing to do with "we want that stuff on HBO." It simply was a case of the new regime at WB feeling they weren't charging Netflix enough for production.

They had interest in buying the rights to all WWE PPV's for ESPN+ before the Peacock deal scooped up the entire network. They have deals in place now with the literal WWE network being part of Disney+ in international markets. There would be nothing precluding them from showing AEW in Australia and owning WWE outright. They would honor the contracts and then simply move WWE content into that region as well. Disney could simply off load the AEW content to another platform or service provider in that region and place WWE product in the previous spots until the contracts with AEW ended.

Again i don't know what you're arguing. It is practical. Disney wants programming to add to ESPN+. Specifically they want sports programming or sports like programming which is what wrestling is considered. They want that because they found out that their customers don't want a bunch of docu series on there. They want sports. If they purchased WWE they would own all the TV rights deal abroad and internationally. The US ones are going to be up for renewal so Disney would have a clean slate to start with. Buying a company is not like you buying a car. It can take months for things to be formally completed including the purchasing and folding in of WWE stock. All that time allows Disney to figure out what it will do with WWE's Tv deals. It can very well keep multiple deals with other non Disney platforms going. It could very well keep WWE on Fox and USA, if both of those companies are happy to pay for the rights. It could put it all on ESPN+ exclusively. Nothing is off the table. And no business is volatile to Disney. Doing business against Disney is volatile.

All of that was already explained. They've supplied content to HBO, which is owned by WB. That's a major competitor. TV content creation is not linear or black and white. It's about creating content for specific markets no matter where they are.

Sure it is. Other content is a competitor to what they do. Your problem is you keep thinking Disney means Mickey Mouse and Captain America. That's most people's vision of Disney. Go look at that jpeg again. THAT is Disney. Disney is everything. It's what Jeff Bezos had in mind when he started to branch Amazon out. They're always in position to buy something. Aside from Apple and its ridiculous liquid war chest, there is no one that has the ability to swoop in and buy something like Disney. Maybe Amazon. They brought back Iger who drop kicked his hand picked guy Chapek, specifically because Iger is a buyer and dealer. He is the guy who brought Marvel, which at the time, no one thought would happen either. Yes lots of layoffs. Those are cost cutting. Chapek had installed cost cutting moves to theme parks among other things that Iger rolled back. This is Iger reforming the board as he wants. If anything Iger laying off 7000 jobs could easily mean he is priming to buy something, because those layoffs won't help the stock price which is the main concern over there.

The only thing that has been rumored before Iger took over was the idea that Disney would sell ESPN off to recoup money and prop up the stock price. That's always been an out there theory as Disney keeps looking for and producing content for it, including the recent deals for the NHL. Disney understands that ESPN+ is a good investment for a future where it wants more control over sports broadcasts across the board.

See but it doesn't. Not the way you think. ESPN has actually been generating lower orofit margins for awhile. ESPN costs a lot to maintain because every 4-5 years you have to try to outbid several other suitors for a limited pool of content like NFL, NBA and MLB games. Not to mention the increasingly high contracts you have to dole out to the on air personalities that drive the shows and provide commentary. All those things go up in price because again the pool is limited. ESPN makes money by selling the sports packages to cable networks but with cable dying there is a need to pivot. So the question is do you go all in on ESPN+ as a future streaming platform that you can monetize when, not if, cable dies all the while understanding that the ESPN+ model would leave you continuously bidding on content against companies like NBC, TNT, Amazon, Youtube and maybe even Apple and Netflix at some point, that will go into the billions. Or do you sell it now, cash in, prop the stock, and let someone else worry about figuring out how to make that platform sustainable.

Yes they would. The purchase isn't a given because they aren't the only ones bidding on it. Just like they weren't the only ones bidding on it when they lost the US rights to Peacock. Disney can be outbid. Now it's for the whole company and the bidders involved will have deep pockets and WWE will be interested in driving up the price. A separate side deal for specific international rights to AEW content does not preclude anything Disney wants or will do. If they lose the bidding they still have content. If they win they honor the contract for the time and the markets they have it in. You're acting as if Disney purchased ALL AEW's broadcast rights. That's not the case. Sorry that upsets you.

You keep thinking that a deal for WWE can happen like tomorrow which is funny. It can take months to a year. So again there is nothing about grabbing rights for one region that affects that. If they had purchased ALL of AEW's TV rights in every market than yes. But that's not the case. And once again the deal is very similar to the one Disney has with WWE for its rights in another market. Except that one is actually accessed on Disney+ itself and not another provider. In Australia we buy shit all the time for regional exclusivity and it doesn't matter who owns it elsewhere.
Our streaming services and lone pay tv company bought exclusive rights to shows and when the actual streaming services launched here they didn't have their own fucking shows cause they already licensed them for years to someone else.

the only buyer that would continue to run WWE shows is the Khans/AEW. any other buyer would buy it for the archives and IP for streaming and merchandise and essentially shut it down.
