Let's think of who you realistically have to rank over him. Hulk Hogan, the Rock & Stone Cold, obviously. Then I'd say Macho Man just for his pop culture relevance for almost 40 years. Along the same lines, Ric Flair but not to the extent of Randy Savage. Then this may be controversial but I'd say Andre the Giant after that just because it feels like everyone still knows who that is. So that's 6 people I'd put ahead of him. So he'd be #7 or #8 depending on whether or not you value him more or less than the Undertaker.

In retrospect, they should have had Mr. Perfect cheat to beat Hogan in a way that "injures" the Hulkster and the Warrior vows to get revenge on his behalf. Then after the title win, Hogan comes out on crutches and raises his hand to do the torch pass and takes a vacation until the Canadian Earthquake feud. The sad thing is that I'm not. Yeah guys like Jim Londos and Joe Stetcher could pack 'em in and Lou Thesz carried the NWA World Title for a decade back when that meant something but are they household names now? The closest to a household name from the golden era is Gorgeous George and it feels disingenuous to rank him above actual global TV stars. The reality is that there's wrestling before Hulk Hogan and wrestling after Hulk Hogan (read: the WWF/E machine) and the after is bigger than the before. It used to be "Verne Gagne is big in Minneapolis," "Junkyard Dog is big in New Orleans," "Da Crusher is big in Milwaukee." With Hogan, you started getting the kind of wrestler who was big worldwide.

And if you're one of those people who would throw on Hackenschmidt and shit like that, who other than wrestling nerds knows that shit?

I don't think that's a totally fair metric, since recency bias will always favor newer stars, keeping them more relevant, and the industry evolves. For example, Thesz, who was still a massive draw, didn't have the infrastructure to become a global icon. Meanwhile, he put asses in seats wherever he could and influenced a generation. So I think their greatness has to still be considered. Some of the GOATs who are still relevant wouldn't be around without a Gorgeous George or Buddy Rogers.

I'd put him at #2 behind Hogan. Austin and Rock weren't relevant for very many years. Hogan was both a long-time face of the company and was involved in utter, business redefining kino. Cena is based because he stuck around for a long time and pretty much kept WWE alive at a time when it had almost no stars. People cope that it was Cena who buried people, but they know full well that those people weren't going to be legends.

There was never not a time from 2005-2015 where WWE didn't have multiple stars. For the first half, the attitude era and fellow OVW guys were there and for the latter half, you still had Brock, HHH, Orton, Jericho, Punk, Taker and Bryan. And even if you go on to dismiss, part of the reason why there was less and less stars is because they'd get built up just to job to Cena.
