Maybe it would've been a better match, but no one really cared to see CM Punk in that match. The whole angle was about Rock coming in to put over Cena, and you dilute that when you make it a triple threat and remove doubt that Cena could beat Rock one on one.

no it wasnt a "failure". it still did the 4th highest number of buys in mania history and the highest gate ever. nobody besides redditors gave a shit about punk not being in the main event. it didnt even cross their minds. only hardcore smarks were upset that he lost the title to the rock. no other match they couldve made wouldve drawn more than cena/rock 2, besides maybe rock vs brock. nothing else would have made a difference. lots of people wanted to see rock/cena 2. squaredcircle isnt the real world. obviously it wasnt going to do as many buys as the rock's big return to wrestling the previous year, but it still did very very well
