Literally the previous year they had Austin Hogan Rock all wrestling and then they move onto Guerrero and Benoit. How the business didn't auto die at that point still shocks me

Wrestling died when the F turned to E.
That's when Vince wanted to be more of a wrestling company and control everything around the guys he was pushing. This is when the organic rise of stars started to die out and the company was meant to be the biggest thing.

WWE became more desperate for some or if any acknowledgement and guys like Austin and Rock were off an on. Austin walked out and beat Debra shortly after. Rock came back to quickly put over Brock because he was finishing. It also lead to the massive blurring that killed like all of their dvds and classic moments for an entire decade.
