A good counter example would be found in Cesaro and Rusev. There was a certain non-zero sized segment of the audience that thought they should have been world champs. They've been exposed as pure fuckin geeks outside of Vince's handling. They didn't bother to improve via the hero's journey that Cody put himself through and it shows in how awful they've been in AEW.
