I don't know what edgy meant in that era. But you google edgy anime characters and a top 10 pops out as the first result. Then you google edgy wrestlers and google asks if you were looking for Edge while linking videos and articles about the times WWE tried to be edgy and failed.
The entire narrative of wrestling nowadays is how noble of a sport it is and how it should be preserved. People are tired of that, they want something that breaks the mold, something more edgy. Finding a pic of Kid Buu working Vegito's shaft with his stupid tail that he has on his head sounds more rebellious than seeing a guy throwing himself through a flaming table.

Tbh wrestling was popular until we were like 14 and then we were trying to fuck. The attitude era kids grew up to be CKY/Jackass party kids. Skaters/rockers.
